From Layoff to Lifesize: Ethan’s 3D-Printed Dinosaur Dream

In the UniFormation Maker Stories Challenge, we received an incredible submission from Ethan Clark — a maker who turned a sudden layoff into a life-size dream.
What began as a wild idea to 3D print a dinosaur evolved into a full-fledged brand, Prehistoric Prints, bringing museum-quality fossils to life with the power of 3D printing.

Ethan’s story reminds us that innovation often rises from uncertainty. His journey is a celebration of resilience, curiosity, and the transformative potential of creation itself.
Let’s dive into his story and see how he turned a setback into a spark for something truly extraordinary.

Ethan Clark's Story:

How It All Started

About five months ago, I got laid off from my job for a month. It was one of those moments where you can either sit still or take a leap into something new. One day, I looked at my girlfriend and said,
“You know what, honey? I’m going to 3D print a life-size dinosaur.”

At the time, I had an old 3D printer collecting dust in the corner — so I fired it up and got to work. For weeks, I printed, sanded, and assembled piece by piece until, about a month later, a six-foot dinosaur fossil replica stood in my living room.

Not really knowing what to do with a life-size fossil in my house, I decided to list it on Marketplace — and it blew up. Suddenly, messages started pouring in from people who wanted all kinds of fossil replicas: different sizes, species, and styles. I got to work again, and just like that, a new passion was born.

After finishing a few projects, I realized I needed to level up my equipment — so I upgraded to the UniFormation GK3 Ultra, and it’s been a total game-changer. Every piece I’ve made since then — including a life-size baby T-Rex — has captured incredible detail and realism.

What started as a random idea during a rough patch has now become Prehistoric Prints, a growing brand bringing museum-quality fossils to life, one layer at a time.

What made me choose UniFormation?

When I realized I needed a more powerful printer, I came across FauxHammer’s YouTube review of the UniFormation GK3 Ultra. He had nothing but great things to say, and he was right. The technology is ahead of the game, and the print quality is unmatched. Every fossil I’ve made since — including a life-size baby T-Rex — has captured incredible detail. I have zero regrets making the switch.

How has 3d printing influenced my life, work, or hobbies?

3D printing has completely changed the direction of my life. What started as a random idea during a tough time turned into something that gives me purpose and creativity every day. It’s opened doors I never expected — from building my own brand to connecting with people who share the same love for prehistoric art and science.

Every print reminds me that what once felt like a setback was actually the start of something bigger.
